Why Am I Getting such Sore Heels in the Morning?

One of the most common conditions presenting at podiatry clinics is heel pain, especially in the mornings when first stepping out of bed. The most common condition responsible for this pain is plantar fasciitis.

This condition involves inflammation at the front of the heel bone where the muscles and tendons of the arch attach. Generally this is an overuse injury. This overuse can be due to an increase in activities (whether exercise or workload), use of old or poor footwear or even due to the shape of a person’s foot.

Podiatrists treat this condition through a combination of modalities. The general plan involves reducing the levels of pain, loosening and strengthening the muscles and soft tissue in the foot and lower leg, and supporting the feet using a combination of strapping tape, orthotics and footwear.
