If your child is active and complaining of pain just below the knee, it may be Osgood-Schlatters’, a common growth-related condition in children and teens.

What Is It?
Osgood-Schlatters’ occurs when the growth plate at the top of the shinbone becomes irritated. During growth spurts, tight quad muscles pull on this area, causing inflammation and pain.
Most common in ages 9–14, especially in children who run or jump frequently.
Common Signs
- Pain and swelling just below the kneecap
- A noticeable bump on the upper shin
- Pain that worsens with sports
- Tenderness when kneeling
Who’s at Risk?
- Soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track athletes
- Children going through rapid growth spurts
- Tight quadriceps or hamstrings
- Year-round sports participation
Care typically includes:
- Activity modification
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Supportive footwear and orthotics if needed
With proper management, most children can continue sports with minimal interruption.
If your child is limping or avoiding activity due to knee pain, early evaluation can prevent prolonged discomfort.
