Is It Safe to Run or Exercise with Foot Pain?

As a podiatrist, I often advise caution: pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. While some mild discomfort is normal during new or intense exercise, persistent or sharp pain should never be ignored.

Common culprits behind foot pain during exercise include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Stress reaction or fracture
  • Tendinitis
  • Neuromas

If you experience foot pain during exercise:

  • Rest and apply ice to reduce inflammation
  • Avoid high-impact activities temporarily
  • Check your shoes for wear and support
  • Consider cross-training with low-impact options like swimming or cycling

Continuing to run through pain can worsen the injury and prolong recovery. If symptoms persist beyond a few days, it’s best to consult a podiatrist. Early intervention helps ensure a faster and safer return to activity.
