Cracked heels are extremely common in summer due to dry weather, open-back shoes, and increased barefoot walking.
What Causes Cracked Heels?
Cracks (fissures) form when:
- Skin becomes dry, thick, or hard
- Pressure from standing or walking causes the skin to split
- Open shoes allow the fat pad to expand sideways
People with eczema, psoriasis, or diabetes are more prone to deeper cracks.
How to Treat and Prevent Cracked Heels
- Moisturise daily with a urea-based cream
- Use a foot file on dry skin (not after showering when skin is soft)
- Wear cushioned or enclosed shoes
- Avoid hot showers that dry out the skin
If cracks are painful or bleeding, a podiatrist can safely reduce hard skin and provide targeted treatment to prevent infection.
