Does it feel like you’re walking on a pebble… but there’s nothing there?

That burning, sharp pain in the ball of your foot could be a Morton’s neuroma

Morton’s neuroma happens when a nerve between your toes (usually the 3rd & 4th) becomes irritated and thickened from repeated pressure and trauma.

Common Symptoms:

  • Burning pain in the ball of the foot
  • Tingling or numbness in the toes
  • A sharp, shooting sensation
  • Pain that worsens in tight shoes or high heels
  • Relief when you take your shoes off

Can Happen From:

  • Tight or narrow footwear
  • High feels
  • Running and high impact sports
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Standing for long periods of time

How a Podiatrist can help:

  • Footwear advice to reduce compression and pressure
  • Offloading modification to the shoe to open up the forefoot, a metdome is commonly used for this
  • Treatment to calm inflammation
  • Discussion about other advanced options if needed

If you’ve been putting up with forefoot pain, don’t ignore it, nerve pain doesn’t usually “just go away.”
